The four steps

  1. 1

    List every zakatable asset

Add up cash, savings, gold, silver, stocks, mutual funds, crypto, business inventory, and receivables you have held for one lunar year (Hawl).

  2. 2

    Subtract short-term debts

Debts due within the year reduce your zakatable wealth. Long-term mortgages are typically only deducted for the current annual installment.

  3. 3

    Compare to Nisab

Use the silver standard (595 g) for a lower, more inclusive threshold, or the gold standard (85 g) for a conservative one. Multiply grams by current price per gram.

  4. 4

    Apply 2.5%

If net zakatable wealth is above Nisab and Hawl is complete, multiply by 0.025 to get your Zakat due.

Common questions

What assets are zakatable?

Cash, bank balances, gold, silver, stocks held for trade, cryptocurrency, business inventory, and receivables you expect to collect. Personal-use items like your home and car are generally exempt.

Silver or gold Nisab — which should I use?

Most scholars today recommend the silver standard (595 g) because it produces a lower threshold, so more Zakat reaches those in need. The gold standard (85 g) is more conservative and produces a higher threshold.

What is Hawl?

Hawl is the lunar year — approximately 354 days. Zakat becomes due when your wealth has stayed above Nisab continuously for one full Hawl.

Do I pay Zakat on crypto?

The mainstream scholarly view is yes — Bitcoin, Ethereum, and similar assets held as stores of value or for trade are treated like currency or trade goods and are zakatable at 2.5% of market value on your Zakat day.

Is gold jewelry zakatable?

It depends on your madhab. The Hanafi school generally includes all gold and silver jewelry. The Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools usually exempt reasonable personal-use jewelry. CashMate’s in-app calculator honors your madhab selection.
